Torrey Pines Golf North vs. South

By Jeff Cain

Torrey Pines Golf - North vs. South

When visiting Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California, you will need to decide which course to play. In some instances this decision may be made for you as you may only be able to get on one or the other. But if you can choose here are a few brief comparisons to help.

1) Difficulty - Having just hosted the US Open the South course is much more difficult than the North course. The South course is considerably longer and as general rule the rough is usually a little tougher on that course. The South can stretch all the way to 7600 yards where the North tops out at around 6900. The slope rating for North is 130 and 143 for the South.

2) Views - One of the main reasons Torrey Pines is so popular is the incredible views while playing the golf course. In my opinion the views on the two courses are about the same. The South probably has a couple more hole near the water. But, the two best views on the course in my opinion are #6 and #7 on the North Course. The Blue tee box on #7 is the best spot on either golf course for views.

3) Cost - The city of San Diego recently raised the green fees at Torrey. If you are not a resident of the City of San Diego the South will cost $174 to play Monday through Thursday the weekend fees Friday through Sunday are $218. Theses fees do not include an electric cart which, if you want one, will cost $40. The North course will cost $95 during the week and $119 on the weekend.

The conclusion of this writer is that if you are coming to Torrey Pines to plat the course the US Open was played at there is no substitute for playing the South. But, remember you will not be playing anywhere near the same course as it was in much different condition in 2008. If you want to have a nice day playing a good golf course by the ocean consider the North. It will save you money and give you mostly the same experience.

I love playing golf at Torrey Pines and do so a couple times a week.
