Top 5 Public Golf Courses in San Diego
By Jeff Cain
Top 5 Public courses in San Diego: 5) Steele Canyon - This course in southeastern San Diego has 27 holes of Championship Golf. Course is usually in pretty good shape and green fees are reasonable for the area probably around $100 on the weekends if you are from out of town. 4) Barona Creek - This course and casino are located out in Lakeside on the Barona Indian Reservation. This course is almost always in very good condition. It can be difficult and it is a long way out there, but it is worth the trip. Green fees are around $150 on the weekend - if you sign up for their players card (no cost) you will save 20% off your green fees. 3) Maderas - This is usually the top rated course in San Diego. It is out in Poway amongst some very large homes. Maderas is a very good golf course that is usually in pretty good condition. Fees are usually steep will cost $200+ on the weekends, although they are running some promotions last I checked. If you can get in on one of these deals - do it. 2) Aviara - This course is part of the Four Seasons Resort in Carlsbad. This course probably doesn't quite measure up to the others, but the supreme shape the course is usually in plus the Four Seasons service make up for it. It is very expensive, and there are very few deals to be had, but if you can afford it and are on vacation why not? 1) Torrey Pines - South - Home of the Buick and the US Open in 2008. This course sits right on the bluffs of La Jolla overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The course is very long and when the rough is up and thick it is a very stern test of golf. If you are from out of town, the South course will cost $200 during the week or$240 on the weekend. Tee times can be difficult to get, but you can purchase advance tee times.
