Common types of boat storage

By Jeff Cain

There are several common varieties of boat storage. If you are lucky enough to own a boat you may need a place to keep it. Many homes these days simply do not have a place to keep a boat and many HOA's simply will not allow you to keep a boat at your house unless it is in your garage.

Marina: Many marina's will offer storage either in boat slips in the water or in a storage yard right next to the water. These are usually very expensive and offers very little protection from the elements. But, the slips especially are ultra convenient.

Uncovered Dirt or Asphalt - this is the most common type. Many self storage facilities have these spaces in addition to self storage. This is also the least expensive and also offers the least protection from the elements. If you live in an extreme climate your boat may not hold up that well over a long period of time.

Covered Parking: Covered boat storage is a relatively new niche of the storage industry. It offers a
liitle more protection from the elements but only from above. These spaces are typically higher in price to uncovered storage.

Enclosed: Basically a self storage unit that is large enough to store a boat inside the unit. These will ususally be non climate controlled or occasionally air cooled. They will protect from most elements except heat and cold and your boat will fare much better over the long term in one of these units. These units will be considerably more per month than the uncovered and covered storage.

Enclosed Climate Controlled: these are the best fully enclosed and climate controlled - like storing
your boat inside your house. The most protection and the most money. If you can afford a boat nice enough to need indoor storage then you can probably afford the cost, but it is expensive.
